Introduction
Mayuka’s journey as an artist began at a young age. Looking beyond text book teachings, Mayuka discovered her own interpretations of what she noticed when looking at an elephant at the zoo.
Mayuka’s developmental studies lead her to a much richer understanding which later inspired her advocacy for elephants.
Find out how Mayuka’s connection with elephants first began and why elephants became a “symbol” of life for her. Join us as we retrace Mayuka’s journey as an artist and learn the details of how she redirected her original intentions from that as an artist observing life to that of an advocate for life itself.

A Brief Look at Zoos and Elephants
Elephants have a natural lifespan of 60-70 years. Confinement among other zoo factors lead to the overriding problem and the leading cause of death to elephants in zoos. Mounting evidence reveals that elephants in zoos suffer due to chronic foot sores, abscesses, arthritis, and joint disease from their confinement in the average zoo enclosure which is often not suitable for these massive land mammals.
This video by Mayuka was created for Billy at the zoo and the rest of the elephants held captive in Zoo's, circuses and for those who are hunted and killed in nature.
